Skate, Swing and Bowl your way into Summer

With daylight savings soon bringing the promise of extended summer afternoons, it’s time for Bre to get active with a new Skate Park, sanded Tennis Courts and resurfaced Cricket Nets. Brewarrina Shire Council has a responsibility to ensure that Youth have access to activities that provide an opportunity for positive engagement and, as a community, work toward encouraging the Youth of Brewarrina to respect and utilise these facilities.

The Youth of Brewarrina make up about 24% of our population and Brewarrina Shire Council is committed to providing youth activities and facilities that interest our young people and promote healthy living. In the past week the tennis courts in Bathurst St have been re-sanded and the cricket nets at Geoff New Oval have been resurfaced and are ready for summer use. The much debated skate park for Memorial Park is well under construction with the concrete slab recently poured and skate modules constructed and ready for installation early next week.

Although the Skate Park will have the skate modules in place it will not open until mid October as the concrete will be required to cure. The security fence is to be put in place and turf established before use. Members of the community have raised concerns regarding the potential for the Skate Park to attract anti-social behaviour in the CBD particularly during the evening and night. Council, however, will work to alleviate this risk by opening the skate park during the daylight hours and having regard to school attendance hours. If activities are organised and supervised by a responsible adult outside of these times, Council may give consideration to opening the park for extended hours under strict conditions. The Skate Park has been partially funded by the Australian Government under the Rudd Governments Economic Stimulus package and has put and additional $50,000 into the Brewarrina community. Local tradesman and suppliers have been utilised where possible to undertake this project. The Modules used in Brewarrina Skate Park are universal and can also be utilised by cyclists and are constructed of timber and fibreglass. These materials were chosen with consideration to OH&S issues and consultation with the Brewarrina Youth Centre. Brewarrina Shire Council hopes the community will utilise and enjoy the Skate Park and, for parents  consenting to let your children use the Skate Park, we have included a safety checklist for consideration below;

Skateboard and rollerblade safety checklist:

Safe falling:

Teach your child how to fall in a safe way. It's a good idea to give your child some falling practice on a grassy patch before they hits the skate ramp.

Tips for falling safely:

Bend your knees and get down low. Try to fall sideways, not backwards or head first.Fall onto your pads.

What to wear

A skate helmet that protects the back of the head (a bike helmet is the wrong shape). If you can push the helmet  backward or forwards once you’ve done up the clips, the helmet is too big and will not protect your child's head properly. Look for the Standards Australia mark on the  helmet. Wrist guards – broken wrists are a   common skating injury.Elbow pads.Kneepads.

Where to skate

Start your child off in your own backyard, in a park, on a bike path or at a skate bowl with beginners’ slopes.Discourage your child from skating on the  footpath or road – they are much more likely to have an accident skating near cars or pedestrians.Supervise children at all times when they are skating.
